'Nothing moves at busy periods'

CALLS have been made to reassess the efficiency of the roundabout at the junction of Lake St and the Antrim Rd.

Sinn Fin Councillor Noel McGeown made the appeal to Road Service: “This roundabout has been the scene of several accidents and continues to cause problems for motorists,” he said.

“The alignment of the roundabout is such that it still has all the aspects of a T-junction with the exit and entrance points much too close to each other. The result is log-jam as motorists stop to give way to traffic to the right, as required. However, the short distances between entrance points means that everyone stops and nothing moves as drivers wait on each other at busy periods.”

He added: “Road Services have to do a complete reassessment of the traffic and the needs at this spot.

“This roundabout has failed because it is too small to cope with the volume of traffic at peak periods and because the alignment of the roads is unsuited to such a control mechanism.

“Either the roundabout is enlarged and the roadways realigned to provide the necessary distances required for a roundabout to work efficiently or it is replaced by a sensor-controlled traffic light system.”
