NI Water warns repairs may cause road closures

NI Water is warning that road closures may be necessary in some areas of Portadown as a result of ongoing sewer repair work.

The Sewer Rehabilitation Programme in Portadown, Lurgan and Magheralin is part of an overall £18 million investment programme taking place across Northern Ireland over the next five years to improve the existing sewerage network and reduce the risk of out of sewer flooding.

The project is being carried out in two stages. Stage one involved the investigative and design work, which included pipeline / manhole cleaning and CCTV surveys. This was completed in these areas in late 2015 and 2016. This identified a number of sections of the existing sewers which are in very poor condition.

To rectify these sections of sewer and avoid potential future collapse or flooding issues, the stage two improvement works are now underway.

Stage two involves the installation of “liners” in existing pipelines, the open-cut repair of short sections of sewer at isolated locations, as well as the laying of some sections of new replacement pipelines and associated works.

The first phase of work in these areas commenced in September 2016 and NI Water anticipate that work will be complete by spring 2017.

Works will be carried out at various locations during this time, and notifications will be issued to residents and businesses in affected areas as the work progresses.

NI Water says it will be necessary at some locations to have lane/road closures in place in order for the works to be carried out safely.

This is to protect the safety of road users, the public and construction workers. It may also be necessary at some locations for work to be undertaken outside of normal working hours to reduce disruption.

NI Water says that traffic management and signage will be in place.

Vehicular access will be maintained for residents/businesses as far as possible, and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
