New ‘inclusive’ playpark planned for Borough

The new park, which will include specialist play equipment, will be located at Flowerfield in Portstewart.

The cost of the new park, in the region of £247,000, will come from funding through the Landfill Community Fund.

At last Tuesday night’s Council meeting, members were given a detailed presentation by John Richardson from Council’s Estates department.

He told members that consultations had taken place with Disability Action, Sandelford School, RNIB, Mencap and Council’s Leisure Services department to establish what the park should provide.

Members were told that the park will also cater for a suitable spectrum of sensory experiences for both disabled and able bodied children.

Mr Richardson told members that following a detailed analysis of 58 parks in the borough, Flowerfield had been selected as the location of the new facility.

Council members agreed to proceed to the next stage of the process, in a bid to provide a facility to cater for the inclusive needs of the community.
