'Messages of hate 'obliterated

A toilet block in Garvagh, which has been a target of sectarian graffiti in the past has once again been used to convey messages of hate with a local resident singled out for particular attention.

SDLP councillor, John Dallat, contacted the Technical Services Department of Coleraine Borough Council and received an assurance that the offensive messages would be removed.

He told The Coleraine Times: “I find it amazing that in the current climatic conditions someone has found the time to go out painting messages of sectarian hate. Perhaps they would be better employed helping to make the footpaths safer rather than demeaning themselves in this way.

“The Council has readily agreed to remove the graffiti and the PSNI in Garvagh are making their inquiries. Unfortunately the CCTV system is currently out of action and this needs to be repaired immediately.

“Sectarian graffiti is a particularly low form of activity which disgusts most people and not least local residents who are striving hard to create an integrated community where everyone is working together in harmony.”

Councillor Dallat added: “No doubt the culprits concealed their identity in their hoods and they should now hide their faces in embarrassment.”
