Memorial garden at Mourneview Park

At the dedication of the memorial to the 15 Glenavonn players killed during the First World War.

An Act of Remembrance was staged along with the unveiling of a mural and memorial garden at the Crescent End of the ground ahead of the match against Ards.

The project to develop the mural and memorial garden was undertaken in partnership with the local ACT initiative (Action for Community Transformation) and honours those Glenavon players who lost their lives as part of the Great War 1914-1918. It is understood that the club lost some 15 players because of the conflict and their sacrifice will now have a permanent memorial.

The development of the mural and memorial garden has been made possible by the efforts and generosity of supporters clubs and local businesses and individuals and the club is grateful to everyone involved. Special thanks has to go to supporter Clive Higginson for his research and information on the players involved.

The Act of Remembrance which included a simple wreath laying ceremony was led by club chaplain Rev Paul Whittaker. A large number of supporters attended what was described as an important occasion in the club’s history.

Lurgan Councillor Colin McCusker said,“The Great War had a huge impact on the town of Lurgan and the surrounding area, and it is fitting that Glenavon should pay its own tribute to those players who lost their lives in that terrible conflict.”

“I want to pay tribute to the Board of Directors, the Supporters Clubs and the ACT Initiative for delivering this project which will be a permanent reminder for Glenavon supporters of the contribution it’s players were prepared to make on and off the football pitch.”
