A request by PIPS Larne to use the town’s Broadway bandstand for its Walk a Mile in my Shoes sponsored walk on September 5 and for an event to mark World Suicide Day on September 10 has been approved by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.
At a meeting of the local authority on August 3, DUP Councillor Gregg McKeen proposed that council grant the group permission for the event which he described as a “crucial cause”.
This was seconded by Alderman Gerardine Mulvenna, who also deemed it a “worthy cause.”
“It has been done before, and this is an excellent way to profile the work they do,” she stated.
Last year, PIPS Larne marked World Suicide Prevention Day with a white dove and balloon release. Larne’s former Mayor Martin Wilson even donned high heels to take part in the Walk a Mile in My Shoes event.
Mr Wilson raised over £4,000 for the group after naming it his charity of the year 2014.
