Man punched in the face and car stolen

POLICE say that they are not treating an incident where a 26-year-old man was punched in the face when his car was stolen was not perceived to be a ‘racially motivated incident.’

The man believed to be from Lithuania had his vehicle stolen when his car was taken during an incident at residential premises at the Carntogher Road, on Monday evening September 24.

Shortly after 8pm, a man was confronted by three men when he answered a knock to his door. The men then forced their way into the house, punched the man in the face and after threatening him they then demanded the keys to the man’s car, a red coloured Honda Civic, which one of them drove off in.

Councillor Stephen Martin described the incident as ‘outrageous.’

“This is an outrageous attack on a man in his own home by criminals wanting to deprive him of his hard earned property,” he said. “Whoever did this clearly does not have a moral compass as to what is right and wrong.

“To step into someone’s home, unleash violence on an unsuspecting homeowner for the sole purpose of stealing his property is just, to most right thinking people, incomprehensible.

“I do not think you can even call this an opportunistic crime. This was clearly planned. I just hope that the PSNI are able to make sufficient headway in their investigation to bring these dangerous individuals to account.”
