Magilligan's 20th Blue Flag in a row

MAGILLIGAN'S Benone Beach has been awarded a Blue Flag award for the twentieth successive year whilst nearby Castlerock has received one for the first time. The Blue Flag Marina award went to Ballyronan Marina.

Environment Minister Edwin Poots presented Northern Ireland's Blue Flag and Seaside awards to eight beaches and one marina in all last week.

The Seaside Awards were presented to eight beaches, with four, Ballygally, Carnlough, Brown's Bay and Millisle receiving exemplary awards.

Commenting at the awards Minister Poots said: "Beach awards are the product of significant investment of resources by beach managers and all those involved are to be congratulated. This investment yields its own rewards for the tourism industry and the environment alike.

"In spite of a wet summer last year, the number of bathing waters of excellent water quality has remained fairly consistent. I feel the improvement of water quality at Castlerock is due in no small part to the significant investment in sewerage and infrastructure at the North Coast Works.

"My Department continues to strive towards the highest standards of beach management and improved bathing water quality."
