Lower speed limit in Killen ‘will be in place soon’

A new 30mph speed limit for Killen is to be in place soon, according to local councillor, Joe O’Neill.

Cllr O’Neill said he had been approached by residents asking for the limit to be lowered on the Lisaclare Road from McGrath’s Corner right up to the very busy housing estates.

“There was genuine concern from residents, as there are a lot of children walking to get the school bus and then playing close to the road in the evening”, he continued. “Both myself and Cllr Dillon meet with Transport NI on this issue at a site meeting in Killeen and it was quickly agreed that this problem needed addressed immediately, We have also made the call for a footpath from the estates down to the old shop so that it will be safer for the children and elderly who have to walk down the road to get the bus.”

Cllr O’Neill thanked Transport NI for their work in addressing the issue, stating the new speed limit would be brought before Mid Ulster District Council for approval.

“This is a step in the right direction for the residents of Killeen, but the fight is far from over, with myself and my Sinn Fein colleagues continuing to pushing for a footpath for the safety of the children in Killen. When it comes to road safety it is vital to be proactive rather than reacting after a tragedy.”
