Lottery millions for Ballymoney Old Church school project announced

THE Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has announced grant awards of more than £2.6million for three heritage projects in Northern Ireland - including one in Ballymoney.

The Old Church School Project Ballymoney is to benefit from a £542,500 windfall.

Built in the grounds of St Patrick’s Parish Church in 1874, the Old School has been derelict since the early 1970s. The project will restore the building to its former glory thorough an extensive programme of capital works which will see the school removed from the Built Heritage at Risk Register for Northern Ireland (BHARNI), safeguarding its future and providing a space for the local community to use and enjoy.

This project will complement the wider regeneration work taking place in Ballymoney through HLF’s Townscape Heritage Initiative investment of £1.29million. The restored building will be used to provide space for a host of community services including debt advice, a healthy living programme and young mothers’ programme.

It will also be used to house a genealogy service which will allow people to research their heritage using church records and graveyards maps. Interpretation will be used to raise awareness of, and share the heritage of the school building, adjacent church and graveyard.
