Latest: Police arrest fifth man in Dungiven investigation

The earlier suspects, aged 31, 53,58 and 62, were detained at various properties by the PSNI and a number of house searches are being carried out.

The fifth man, however, was arrested in Antrim.

Detective Chief Inspector Una Jennings, from Serious Crime Branch, said: “We are investigating various forms of paramilitary activity in the area, predominantly over the last four years.

“These include shooting incidents and threats. The suspects have been taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Antrim police station for questioning.”

Meanwhile, a 58-year-old man was also this morning arrested in West Belfast as part of the investigation into the abduction and murder of Jean McConville in 1972.

Detective Inspector Neill McGuinness from Serious Crime Branch said the suspect has too been taken to Antrim for questioning.

Mrs McConville, 37, was a widow and mother of 10 children. She abducted in December 1972 from her flat in the Divis area of west Belfast and shot by the IRA.

Her body was recovered in August 2003 on a beach in Co Louth.

Further searches were also carried out in the Ardoyne area of North of Belfast last night (Nov 26) by detectives investigating ongoing dissident republican activity.

Detective Superintendent Kevin Geddes said: “Detectives from the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch, assisted by local police, carried out searches at two properties last night.

“A number of items were seized and taken away for forensic examination”.
