A Larne native is set to take the lead role in the Grand Opera House’s production of Legally Blonde.
Johanna Johnston, 20, will play the part of Elle Woods, following in the footsteps of Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon who portrayed Elle in the film version.
The play follows the adventures of perennially perky Elle, who loves to be pampered and to shop for the latest all-pink outfits.
However, far from being a ditsy fashionista, this sorority sister is smarter than she seems and doesn’t take “no” for an answer.
When her boyfriend dumps her for someone “more serious,” Elle sets out to win him back by putting down the credit card and hitting the books.
Ready to revamp her image, Elle goes where no Delta Nu sorority girl has gone before: Harvard Law School!
The play follows Elle’s adventure from the sorority house to the halls of justice, accompanied by her cute chihuahua sidekick Bruiser.
Along the way, Elle proves that being yourself and going after what you want never goes out of style.
Johanna commented: “To play the role of Elle is a dream come true.
“It’s one of my favorite musicals so to play my dream role is just mind-blowing.
“I just hope I can do the character justice.”
Johanna, who has seven brothers and is the only girl in her family, is a member of Ulster Operatic, New Lyric and Bangor Operatic companies.
She has previously played the part of “Anybody’s” in Bangor Operatic‘s Westside Story and Shy in Londonderry Musical Society’s production of Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
She has also played the roles of Snow White, Princess Jasmine and Cinderella in the courtyard theatre pantomimes over the past few years.
Last year, she was contracted to the Millennium Forum in Londonderry for their Christmas Production of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Later this year, Johanna will portray the Slave of the Ring in this year’s Grand Opera House production of Aladdin.
She would like to thank her friends, family, and the Uplift and Ulster Operatic Companies for their support.
Legally Blonde will be showing at The Grand Opera House from Tuesday September 29 until Saturday October 3.
