Council officials estimate that all burial plots at Larne cemetery will have been sold in just over three years.

Mayor, Cllr Maureen Morrow asked for the projection, along with an indication of the time line for completion of the new cemetery.

Chief executive Geraldine McGahey replied that 430 graves were still available in the old cemetery.

She added that consultants had completed their work on the new burial ground and officers were awaiting an NI Environment Agency report on “the pathogen level in the ground water”.

Mrs McGahey added that council had been through a pre-application planning process and “once approved” the project would be ready to move forward.
