Julia Kee to ‘brave the shave’ for Macmillan

Julia is to have her head shaved as part of Macmillan’s ‘brave the shave’ campaign during a Macmillan coffee morning in the local community centre.

The Ulster Unionist politician decided to take the brave decision after learning of Macmillan’s support to the North West. “Macmillan have pledge £1 million to the cancer unit in Altnagelvin”, she said.

“When I found that out I just had to do something. That was it, I just had to do it. My sister-in-law is a nurse up there so I know how hard they work and how important the job they do is.

“When you look at it, it’s not just the government that are doing their bit to support the health service. It is organisations like Macmillan so I decided I had to do something to show them my support.

“I have to admit I am a bit nervous about it. When you think about it people are having to lose their hair all the time when they go through what is often very difficult cancer treatment so really, when you think about, it is not really too much to get your head shaved.

“There’s £700 raised already too so that is good news. The coffee morning starts at 11am in Tullyally Community Centre and everyone is very welcome to come along and show their support for Macmillan.”

The Western Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support are developing a new health and wellbeing campus at Altnagelvin for patients, carers and families affected by cancer and other long term conditions, such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, arthritis and hypertension. The joint plans include the construction of a new £1 million purpose-built Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre beside Agnes Jones House, which will be refurbished and used as a centre for the management of other long term and chronic conditions. It is hoped the new campus will be fully operational by late 2016 to coincide with the opening of the new Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin.
