Jailed after an assault

A CRUMLIN man jailed by an Antrim magistrate after he admitted assaulting a man and biting a police officer, has anger management issues, a court has heard.

He also grabbed his partner by the throat in a separate incident.

He was then charged with assaulting a woman, this was in relation to an incident that took place on July 27.

The court heard that in relation to the January 1 incident, police were called to Main Street, Crumlin following the report of a number of fights.

Police spoke to a male who said he had been grabbed by the defendant and punched three times to the head, the court was told.

The prosecution said the defendant started swearing when he was arrested by police, he then struck one of the officers in the face.

The court was told that the defendant then bit another police officer on the hand, which caused a puncture wound.

The court heard that the defendant failed to answer his bail on a number of occasions and then produced an alibi claiming that he was with his girlfriend on the night of the incident.

Prosecution then provided details about the charge relating to July 27, when police received a report of an assault in Crumlin.

The court heard that after a verbal argument the defendant grabbed her by the throat and squeezed. The court heard that the injured party warned Johnston that if he did that again he “wouldn’t see his son again.”

A defending solicitor told said Johnston had “anger management problems.”

Speaking about the incident on January 1, defence said: “It was clear that a large amount of alcohol had been consumed. He had went to the bar in Crumlin and had been drinking up until midnight.

“A disgraceful scene occurred in Crumlin Main Street, he takes full responsibility for the incident. He lost his temper with police and expressed his frustration by lashing out at police.

Defence added: “The defendant clearly has a case of the drink’s in and the wit’s out.”

Speaking about the assault on the defendant’s partner, District Judge Robert Alcorn said: “This is the mother of his child, the way he treated her was appalling.”

Sentencing Johnston to a total eight months in prison for the offences and putting into operation a suspended sentence, Judge Alcorn said: “I don’t know what on earth has gone wrong with Crumlin but it’s getting to be not a safe place to go, with thugs like you around.

“He must be a brave man beating up the injured party the way he did,” he added.

The defendant is to be returned to Antrim Crown Court on April 16 following a preliminary enquiry.
