Horseman Billy honoured in New Year list

A FORMER Coleraine police officer and well known horseman has a date at Buckingham Palace.

Billy Roulston received a MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours for his outstanding service to equestrian sport in Northern Ireland,

For the past 30 years, Billy (77) has devoted all of his leisure time promoting the sport across the Province.

BIlly is a member of the Route Hunt Club and the Balmoral Show Committee.

As an executive member of the Ulster Branch of the Showjumping Association, he is also joint Show Director of the Portrush-based Causeway Coast Charity Showjumpers.

A founder member, Billy said: "I looked around and found the 'Bowl arena' just across from the Dunluce Centre in a sheltered area with links footing.

"We leased the land from Coleraine Borough Council with the aim of getting equipment and setting up shows.

"Alec Creith from Bushmills who had horses with Brian Henry was a great help.

"I love to see young people progress and go on to international success.

"Thankfully Northern Ireland has a great grass roots system for showjumping - and we at Causeway Coast are delighted to have been part of the success story."

Originally from Co Donegal, Billy joined the Royal Ulster Constabulary in the early Fifties.

After his training, he was posted to Downpatrick, where he met his wife Norrie.

He was promoted to Detective Sergeant and after 31 years service retired in 1983.

Billy, who was once a keen golfer is a past captain of Rathmore Golf Club, and a member of Royal Portrush Golf Club.

For many years he represented Rathmore in the Irish Senior Cup. He was also an International clay pigeon shooter.
