The Heaney family came together to raise vital funds for one of Northern Ireland’s leading cancer charities, Friends of the Cancer Centre, after Don passed away last November.

Don had attended the Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital and the family wanted to give something back for the care and support given to Don and to their family.

In November Don’s wife Anne took part in a 5km run raising £6,423.92.

In addition to this the family recently held a golden oldies disco in the Woodville Arms in Lurgan which raised £5,225 bringing the total to an incredible £11,648.92.

Commenting on what motivated the fundraising drive, Don’s sister Moya O’Neill said: “After Don lost his battle with cancer, we felt that it was important to have a positive focus and to give something back for the care he received during his treatment.

“The funds raised will assist the Cancer Centre in their continued commitment to supporting cancer patients and their families.

“We, as a family, have experienced first-hand just how important this support is and I am happy to have had the opportunity to ensure that it can continue for other patients and their families.

“On behalf of Anne and our family I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped us raise such a brilliant amount of money and for all their support over the last number of months since Don passed away.”

Fundraising officer for Friends of the Cancer Centre, Sarah Breen, said:

“The Heaney family have done exceptionally well in raising so much money for Friends of the Cancer Centre in memory of Don.
