Fire Service use Lucas cutting equipment to free trapped motorist

FIVE people were taken to hospital on Monday afternoon following a collision at the junction of Ballygudden Road and the main street in Eglinton.

One vehicle overturned and ended up in a garden, and members of the Fire and Rescue Service were called in to effect a rescue using specialist cutting equipment.

The alert was raised at 2.20pm on Monday, and a PSNI spokesman said the road was blocked and motorists were advised to avoid the area. The scene was cleared by 5.44pm.

A spokeswoman for the Fire and Rescue Service said three appliances from Crescent Link Station were tasked to the scene and on arrival the fire crews were presented with a two vehicle collision.

“Five persons were in one car, and a male, who was trapped, was released using hydraulic cutting equipment,” she said, adding: “ The male was taken to hospital by Ambulance, as were the other four people in this car, which included two children.”

She added: “The person in the other vehicle was uninjured.

Fire and Rescue Service involvement in the incident was completed by 3.03pm.
