Extra LED lighting at Thornleigh after elderly voice fears of being left in dark

Extra lighting is to be installed at a Lurgan housing estate after elderly residents complained of their fears of being in the dark.

After new LED lighting was installed, residents in Thornleigh complained that they were struggling to see.

Sinn Fein Cllr Liam Mackle said: “While the new lights have been problematic in many areas in Thornleigh they were particularly bad.

“The area where residents parked was in complete darkness,” said Cllr Mackle.

The Department for Infrastructure said: “Following an assessment on LED lighting levels at Thornleigh, it was found that the level of lighting required alteration due to the positioning of existing lighting and the width of the road. The installation of an additional street lighting, and adjustments to two existing lights, is required. It is planned that this work will be complete by the end of the year.”

The DFI said it had received 281 complaints which have been assessed and the majority were found to meet the appropriate lighting levels. The scheme in Craigavon and Banbridge is costing around £3m
