Weekend opening at Mid and East Antrim recycling sites ‘under review’

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council says its household recycling centre opening hours remain under review.

It follows calls on social media for the facilities, including Redlands, Larne, to be available at the weekend for those who cannot access during week days.

A Mid and East Antrim Council spokesperson today (Thursday) said: ““We are currently providing a household recycling service in Larne five days a week. The potential for weekend opening is being kept under review.”

On Larne resident asked: “When will the Redlands recycling centre open at the weekend? I work Monday to Friday.”

The local authority says it is working hard to maintain recycling and waste services during the pandemic,

The council has advised previously that household recycling centres are open to Mid and East Antrim residents only with identification required for access.

To ensure social distancing, motorists are required to unload their own waste goods. The usual items are now being accepted for recycling.

Vans and trailers are permitted although commercial or construction demolition waste is not allowed.

Earlier this week, there was anger over the dumping of material near an access point to Woodburn Forest, on the outskirts of Carrickfergus.

The fly-tipping was slammed as “selfish” given that household recycling centres are available. Read more here
