Blackhead Path attracting 30,000 walkers per month

Using monitoring equipment, Mid and East Antrim Council has been recording the number of users of its many routes over recent months.

Among the most popular of these has been the recently reopened Blackhead Path in Whitehead which has attracted around 30,000 users per month since the completion of extensive renovation works in July.

The £3.5m project involved improvement works at four main areas along the coastal path from the Old Castle Road right up to the lighthouse including extensive rock armour protection, new steps and handrails and extensive scaling, fixing and netting of rocks. Read here

The Mayor, Councillor Peter Johnston, said he is delighted to see so many enjoying the path again.

“Council has made a major investment in Blackhead Path, and it is wonderful to see it being used and enjoyed by so many.

“Not only is it a massive boost to the local area and the businesses in it but it is also providing people with an essential source of relaxation and exercise as they take in some of the most beautiful sights Northern Ireland has to offer.

“From the seaside path to the iconic lighthouse, this is a walk you will never forget.

“Tourism is an essential element of our local economy, and as we continue to promote the #RediscoverMEA, the Blackhead Coastal Pathway is integral in attracting visitors and walkers from near and far into the borough.”
