Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council Cllr Eóin Tennyson voiced disappointment that the Department for Infrastructure doesn’t have plans to build a bridge at the Bannfoot.

He was speaking after a response from the Minister for Infrastructure to a written Assembly Question by his party colleague, Andrew Muir MLA.

Eóin said, “While I am grateful to Minister Mallon for taking the time to respond to the Assembly Question from my colleague on the Bridge the Bannfoot campaign, I am incredibly disappointed to learn that there are currently no plans to progress this project.

“The Department says part of the reason for this is that the bridge has not been included in any greenway proposals put forward by the local council. However, the project must not be permitted to simply fall between two stools. I will be pushing for greater strategic, joined-up working between ABC Council and the Department to deliver green infrastructure in the borough.

“A pedestrian bridge where the Upper Bann meets Lough Neagh would not only provide a quick, safe and picturesque crossing and enhance our local cycling network but would also have huge symbolic significance, connecting our people and rural communities along the lougshore.

“It’s frustrating that, despite years of dedicated campaigning from local residents over the years, we’ve seen so little movement. I will now follow up with Council and request that officers engage with local communities and stakeholders on the matter.”
