Editor convicted over crime scene photos

THE MAURITIAN newspaper editor who published pictures of the body of Michaela McAreavey has been convicted of outrage to religious and public morality.

The 27-year-old schoolteacher from Ballygawley, was murdered on her honeymoon in Mauritius in January 2011.

The Sunday Times newspaper in Mauritius published several pictures showing the crime scene including Michaela’s body and her injuries on 15 July 2012.

The editor, Imraan Hosany, was arrested three days later. At the Intermediate Court on Wednesday, magistrate Wendy Rangan ruled Imraan Hosany was guilty.

A lawyer for Imraan Hosany said that he will be appealing the conviction. Akil Bissesur said: “My client has been found guilty and we respect this court ruling. I can tell you that my client will appeal against this judgement.”

The pictures, taken at the Legends hotel shortly after the murder, were published days after two former hotel workers Avinash Treebhoowon and Sandip Moneea were acquitted of Michaela’s murder.

Michaela, daughter of Tyrone GAA manager Mickey Harte was on Honeymoon with her husband John McAreavey on the island following their Wedding just 12 days earlier.

Imraan Hosany will be sentenced on Thursday.
