East Antrim ploughmen are cream of the crop

PRESIDENT of the Northern Ireland Ploughing Association William King paid tribute to the significant input of members of Kilroot Agricultural Ploughing Society, while speaking at the east Antrim group’s annual presentation dinner dance at the Knockagh Lodge.

Mr King said of one of the oldest ploughing societies in Northern Ireland: “Their input over the years into the Northern Ireland Ploughing Association has been immense, with five or six members on the central committee. Kilroot also currently provide us with the vice-chairman of the association and I’d like to thank Wilson Holden for all his efforts. There’s also Tom Hay, who’s a member of the finance committee anda great worker for the Kilroot society.”

William added that he was pleased to see James Ross, one of the oldest members of the association, at the awards ceremony. James is a member of the Islandmagee Ploughing Society, who held their annual match earlier that afternoon.

Kilroot’s 102nd annual match took place in November, attracting 34 competitors to the lands of Mr and Mrs Ernest Porter, Trenchill Road, Ballyeaston.

Among the prize winners were Ballyboley man Allen McAnally, winner of the Ian Simms Challenge Cup in the world-style confined class.
