A former Larne couple who passed away earlier this year are to be laid to rest in their beloved home town at the weekend.

William and Sarah Witherspoon (nee Kitson) – who were known locally as Billy and Elza – were born and bred in Larne before emigrating to Canada in 1967.

Sadly, Billy and Elza – pictured – died within five months of one another this year. Now, their children are set to honour their final wish by bringing their remains on an emotional final journey across the Atlantic.

Billy and Elza met when they worked at the former AEI factory in Larne. Billy’s skills were in demand in Canada, so they moved there for what was supposed to be a few years.

Their three children, Janeen, Stephen and Carole, along with grandchildren Victoria and Jonathan, will bid them a final farewell at a special remembrance event in the town this weekend.

The family told the Times: “Our dad passed away in March, followed by our mom in August.

“The summer seat at Chaine Memorial Park in memory of them is due to mom’s love of that park and the many stories she shared with us of her youth, overlooking the sea which she loved and missed.”

A wake will be held in Larne Tech Old Boys social club on Sunday, November 8 from 2pm.

Friends of the couple are invited to go along and pay their respects.
