Councillor Kieran Mulholland has condemned the dumping of material including asbestos at Slieveanorra Forest on the Old Cushendun Road in Loughgiel.

Cllr. Mulholland said: “Everyone is by now well aware of the dangers of asbestos and its associated health risks. It is very disappointing that somebody thought it was acceptable to dump this dangerous material in an area of outstanding natural beauty, on top of a water course, without any care for the environment or the community.

“I have contacted Council Officials and whilst the material isn’t yet removed the process to get it lifted has begun. This has to be done safely and properly. Council Officers informed me that they estimate around 20 tonnes of material to be removed.

“I thank the constituent who brought this to my attention and I would hope that it is an isolated incident; unfortunately however the Loughgiel and Armoy area have suffered increasing incidents of fly tipping and I’ll be asking Council to explore ways to remedy this epidemic.”
