'Christians must defend freedoms'

WHITEABBEY Congregational Church hosted a meeting for English-based group 'Christian Concern For Our Nation' (CCFoN) last week.

The organisation's Director, Andrea Williams, gave a notable presentation about its work throughout the UK in upholding and defending the rights and liberties of Christians who have been marginalised in the workplace.

Mrs Williams was in Northern Ireland for three church events, including a conference of Elim pastors and church workers at Hillsborough. The meeting in Whiteabbey was chaired by the Rev Paul Dowling, who welcomed Mrs Williams and her colleagues to Newtownabbey

During her address, Mrs Williams encouraged Christians to be assertive in defending the freedoms of centuries which, she said, are under threat from the current Government.

She spoke about the 1967 Abortion Act, the erosion of marriage in the 1970s and 80s, the Civil Partnerships Act of 2004 and other issues such as cloning and animal and human hybrid experiments.

Mrs Williams said that during her 22 years in the legal profession she had witnessed "vital freedoms eroded because of the divergence in our laws away from Biblical truth and from our Judeo-Christian heritage."

Commenting on current attempts to legislate for Euthanasia in the UK, she urged Christians to keep lobbying against such a move and to write to MPs and MLAs expressing their concerns.

CCFoN works alongside the Christian Legal Centre, an organisation which aims to protect the rights of Christians to speak Biblical truth in the public square. Their recent work has included representing a nurse who was facing the sack for offering to pray with a patient.

Mrs Williams left her audience in Whiteabbey with Psalm 124 verse 8 ringing in their ears - "Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth."

The meeting concluded with the singing of Psalm 124 and with prayer from the Rev Dowling.
