Bogus police con their way into home

MOIRA; Police believe that a distraction burglary at Moira last week was connected to a similar incident in Belfast and are appealing for information.

On Wednesday November 2 around 4pm two men gained entry to a property in the Ballynalargy area of Moira after claiming they were police officers. These individuals were driving a silver saloon car.

On the same day, between 5.00pm and 6.00pm, two distraction burglaries and one attempted distraction burglary were reported in the area of Inverleith Drive, Belfast.

Again the men claimed to be Police Officers and gained entry to two houses under false pretences.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw two men, one in his thirties and the other in his fifties, or a silver saloon car that was sighted in the area of the incidents to contact them.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour in this area is asked to contact detectives at Lisburn on 0845 600 8000.

Police are also keen to reiterate safety messages to those who may be vulnerable to bogus callers.

There are simple steps to take to protect your home from bogus callers - ask callers for proof of identity. Genuine police officers/tradespeople should carry a photographic identification card. Check this carefully. If you are unsure, telephone Quick Check - dial 0800 013 22 90 and the person on the other end will check the caller at your door is legitimate.

The service is free and operates 24 hours a day. Genuine callers will not mind waiting until you have checked that they are who they say they are. If you are not convinced by the identity of the caller, do not let them in and call police immediately.
