Ballycarry company’s sweet treat up for Food Award

A Ballycarry-based company is up for a prestigious food award thanks to the unique flavour of one of its sweet treats.

Camran Crafts was set up a year ago by friends, Tracie McFerran and Wendy Campbell.

Producing an artisan range of marshmallows, the company is one of seven who have been shortlisted in the Small Producer category of the Irish Quality Food Awards.

Initial judging took place in July, with entries assessed on a range of criteria from taste to packaging.

“The company started as both of us have 11-year-old children with autism and we were hoping to produce something texturally for them that was also very natural,” explained Tracie.

And since then, both Tracie’s son and Wendy’s daughter have proved to be central to the business.

“They’ve come up with a lot of new flavours and they like to sample them!” Tracie added.

However, it was the slightly more grown-up combination of orange, mango and gin which tickled the tastebuds of the Food Awards judges last month.

Created by Wendy, the flavour was adapted from one of Tracie’s favourite cocktails.

“We’re very proud and very humbled to have been shortlisted,” said Tracie.

The shortlisted products will undergo further tasting by a team from awards sponsor, Dunnes Stores and a celebrity judge, with the winner to be announced at a gala event in Dublin on September 8.
