INMATES of HMP Magilligan self-harmed on 53 separate occasions over the past five years.

Justice Minister David Ford revealed the level of self-harm by prisoners reported in the County Londonderry prison facility in response to an Assembly Question.

The level of self-harm at the local jail was much lower than that in Maghaberry and Hydebank Wood.

An overall increase of reported incidents by 77 cases between 2009 and 2010 across Northern Ireland was down to improved reporting by staff and more advanced recording facilities introduced in January 2010, using the Prisoner Record Information Systems Management (PRISM), the Minister said.
