A talk in Larne Library on Monday, November 28, will consider the impact of the Battle of the Somme on the outcome of World War One.
‘The Somme: a Wasteful Bloodbath or the Key to Victory?’ a talk by author and historian Philip Orr from 4-5pm is being held to mark The Decade of Centenaries and will also reflect on whether it was ‘a wasteful bloodbath or the key to victory’ as casualties on both sides were immense.
Philip Orr is a former teacher and military historian and is author of a number of books and dramas that deal with aspects of Irish history.
He will describe in detail how, on that same day 100 years earlier, Ireland went to war, changing the lives of many families forever.
The events of that day led to a conflict during which thousands of Irishmen lost their lives and Philip will provide an erudite insight into both the history and reality of the time.
Libraries NI is hosting a series of events to commemorate the Decade of Centenaries.
Admission to this event is free but booking is advisable.
