An 800 metre runner from Larne was selected in August 2000 for the GB team which was travelling to compete in the Sydney Olympics.
James McIlroy who had originally represented Ireland before switching to the GB fold, went on to reach the semi final stages of the mid-distance event at the summer Olympic games.
James who was 23 at the time, had a very successful build up to the Olympics with podium places at Crystal Palace.
The same week, Larne FC faced a winding up order after failing to pay tax bills of £15,000.
One reason given for the shortfalls was Sky’s coverage of Premier League football in England, with the club given a few weeks to try and get the funds needed.
