An evening of jazz at the Island Arts Centre

JAZZ music enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that Australia’s first lady of jazz, Janet Seidel will be performing at the Island Arts Centre in Lisburn on Friday March 30.

With seventeen critically acclaimed albums to her name vocalist / pianist Janet Seidel currently enjoys a rare and enviable international reputation.

In the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD she is described as ‘Australia’s first lady of jazz’. Her version of ‘A Man and a Woman’ also recently played on an episode of US hit television show Glee.

In Australia with 17 CDs to her credit she has had long time success since the early nineties with Awards and prestige gigs including national tours, festivals, orchestral concerts and more. Internationally she has toured to many areas including UK, USA, Europe, the Middle East and many South East Asian countries where her CDs have been licensed. The trio also have several complete shows in their repertoire including DeLovely (Cole Porter), Dear Blossom (Blossom Dearie), Old Black Magic (Johnny Mercer) and Doris and Me (Doris Day) which have played theatres and cabaret venues around Australia and recently also in the UK.

In Japan she has been consistently named in the top 10 jazz vocalists in the Jazz Polls and the Trio has done major tours there including sharing the bill with jazz diva Helen Merrill and the George Mraz Quartet and again in 2008 with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Roberta Gamberini.

The current trio since 2001 features NZ born guitarist Chuck Morgan who was renowned as the top jazz and session guitarist in Auckland for many years before moving to Sydney in 1986. His credits include several years with TV and Radio Orchestras and renowned US composer/arranger Russ Garcia and countless dates with artists from The Four Aces, Bobby Shew, Lanny Morgan, Rod McKuen, Bob Barnard, and many more. A masterful jazz guitarist in every way, he also has a unique ability on ukulele.

David Seidel (Janet’s brother) is the bass player, favouring a rich acoustic sound and veteran of many years experience with credits ranging from recordings and tours including Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, State Opera South Australia, Al Cohn, Buddy Tate, Urbie Green, Lee Konitz, Barry Humphries, Harry Secombe, Cilla Black, Rod McKuen, Del Shannon. The Drifters, The Coasters, Bob Barnard, Bernie McGann and many more. The repertoire will be drawn from the trio’s special arrangements from the Great American songbook and her variety of themed shows such as Peggy Lee, Blossom Dearie, Cole Porter, Doris Day and Johnny Mercer.
