There were concerns about the improvement scheme that was due to happen on the A8 Road in November 2000.

The Minister for Regional Development, Gregory Campbell, announced that plans to improve the Belfast to Larne A8 Road may have to have been shelved due to a lack of funding.

He told members of the DRD Assembly Committee that several major road schemes, including the A8, may have had to have been deferred.

He said: “Committee members will be aware that there is a funding gap of around £80m per annum if we are to maintain our roads adequately and develop the strategic road network. I can not complete all the major roadwork schemes currently listed in the five year preparation pool.”
