New book takes a look at the National Schools in the Draperstown area

Book to be launched by Ballinascreen Historical Society.

In the 40th year of the Society’s existence a new online bookshop has been set up so that the 46 publications can be viewed, and appropriate purchases made, from any part of the world.

The latest book – “Blackhill School, Draperstown (1820-1967) and Other Local National Schools” – is coming soon and will be launched at an informal, drop-in and outdoor event on Saturday, October 10.

This strictly regulated function will be held in the spacious courtyard at The Kilcronaghan Centre from 2.30pm to 4pm.

This will not be a meeting as such (no speeches and no seating) and if the weather is inclement it will be held in the conference centre (again, strictly regulated).

This major book has been compiled by Alistair Bodkin and it has 260 pages and is full colour throughout. It has five chapters, 11 appendices and 284 footnotes.

There are 69 illustrations including 49 photos. Other features worth highlighting are 32 maps, a personal names index and a general index.

The old national schools referred to in the book are Altayaskey; Bancran; Brackagh Disert; Brackagh Rowley; Brackaghlislea; Carnamoney; Cranny; Derrynoyd; Desertmartin; Draperstown; Drumard; Iniscarn; Keenaght; Kilcronaghan; Killynumber; Killytoney; Knocknagin; Labby; Moneyshanere; Moneymore; Moneyneany; Stramore; Straw and Tobermore.

An open invitation is extended to everyone to attend this unusual event which will strictly adhere to all current precautions. Those attending will be able to purchase the book for £12-50, otherwise it will retail at £14-50.

There will also be free copies of the Society’s 40 page booklet “Celebrating 40 Years!” and free leaflets giving particulars of the teachers employed in the featured schools in 1905. Signed copies will make ideal and unique gifts.
