Cancer Focus Northern Ireland is calling on men here to get hairy and support its Tache for Cash fundraiser.

Whether it’s a handlebar, horseshoe or walrus tache, the charity is encouraging our men folk to get their work colleagues or friends together (virtually) and master the art of trimming for a good cause.

The money raised by Tache for Cash will help Cancer Focus Northern Ireland to continue its important support and cancer prevention work for men both during and after Covid.

Cancer prevention officer Anthony Stuart and his children Molly (9), Sean (7) and Roisin (4) are encouraging men here to take part in the Cancer Focus NI Cash for Tache fundraiser and help raise awareness of men’s health during November.Cancer prevention officer Anthony Stuart and his children Molly (9), Sean (7) and Roisin (4) are encouraging men here to take part in the Cancer Focus NI Cash for Tache fundraiser and help raise awareness of men’s health during November.

Rosie Forsythe, corporate fundraising manager, said: “Research shows that while cancer affects both men and women, more men die from the disease. Men can change this by talking about their health concerns and by taking positive steps to improve their health.

“Every year in Northern Ireland around 7,300 men are diagnosed with cancer and around 2,300 lose their lives.

“These are startling statistics - but we have some positive news as well. Up to half of cancers can be prevented if we all follow a few healthy messages. Meanwhile, men’s cancer survival rates are improving and their smoking rates are falling.

“In a normal year Cancer Focus NI provides health support and advice to over 3,000 men in Northern Ireland. Many of our services have been halted for the time being, including health checks on the ManVan, but we want to be in the best position possible to continue all our work as soon as we can. That is why we are asking for your help now.”

The charity has pointed out simple guidelines that everyone can follow to lower their risk of cancer are: keep to a healthy weight, eat healthily, take care in the sun, limit alcohol intake and don’t smoke. Finally, men (and women) over 60 should avail of the bowel screening programme.

Kenny Parker, owner of The Man Shack, said: “As a local company we are delighted to be able to partner with an amazing local charity.

“The work Cancer Focus NI carries out across Northern Ireland is vital in raising awareness of male cancers and how important it is for men to keep on top of their health. We are delighted to help promote the campaign as much as we can.”
