Internet day at Laurelhill

LAURELHILL Community College hosted a safer internet day on Friday last.

A spokesman said: “Laurelhill encourages its pupils to use ICT and the Internet responsibly. We try to make our Year 8 pupils aware of the advantages and the dangers of online communication through our scheduled lessons, but in addition we occasionally invite outside speakers to reinforce this message.”

Last week George Ellis of the PSNI attended the college and delivered a frank and informative talk on the potential dangers of using social networking sites and the internet to Year 8 pupils.

Online-Safety videos from CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) were shown, and pupils were engaged in a discussion on the potential dangers of careless use of Facebook and other social networking sites.

The issue of cyberbullying was also discussed.

The Year 8 pupils present were encouraged by the Head of ICT, Mr Carton, to talk about the issues raised with their parents.

The college is grateful to Mr Ellis and the PSNI for their assistance in delivering these materials.
