Country concert in memory of Mavis

An evening of great music, ‘Country Friends Forever’, will cater to hundreds of country music fans on Wednesday, April 24, at Lagan Valley Island Centre, Lisburn, in aid of Action Cancer.

The event kicks off at 7.45pm, and will see five artists perform in memory of local woman Mavis Hoare who sadly lost her cancer battle in 2012.

The artists performing were friends of Mavis and are donating their time. The artists include local favourites Warren Smith, Country Harmony, Boxcar Brian, Ann Williamson and Fergal Flaherty who is flying back especially from Tenerife to perform at the event.

Mavis’ daughter, Glynis Hobson, who is organising the event in memory of her mum along with her family, explains, “My mum was such a positive vibrant person and it was this, along with her strength of character that enabled her to survive and enjoy life for as long as she did.

“We really wanted to do something positive to celebrate her memory. After we lost her last September so many of her country music friends offered their support and she was such a fan that we all agreed that this was a fabulous tribute.

“We’re pleased that the event will provide vital funds – a gift of hope – to a fantastic local cancer charity, Action Cancer. We’d really love to fill the Island Centre for the event.

“Mum’s breast cancer was diagnosed in 2008 after a routine mammogram and that started a long and emotional journey for her and the family.

“Though she had to endure four years of treatment involving operations, drugs, side effects, endless tests and eventually a terminal diagnosis, she never gave up and right to the very end was always smiling.”
