Silverwood take a massive lead in Rutherford
THE Banbridge Sam Rutherford Cup team, captained by Tom Mulholland, are in a precarious position after the first leg of their quarterfinal match against Silverwood.
Banbridge had beaten Rockmount in the previous round and they should have been confident of beating Silverwood.
The first leg was played last Sunday over the Craigavon course and Banbridge never really got to grips with the match. Their target was to finish no worse than ten holes down. That would have given them a good chance at home.
Banbridge didn’t get off to the best of starts because they were a player short right up to tee-off time. John Gallagher came to the rescue but it was asking a lot of him seeing as he was unfamiliar with the course and it was his debut for the club.
The four Banbridge pairings were as follows: Jim Matthews and John Gallagher; Keith Steenson and Gary McCartney; Tom Mulholland and William Malcolmson; Nigel Bryson and Cameron Morton.
All the Silverwood team played close to par all the way round and all credit to them.
Suffice to say, Banbridge are 24 holes down and, barring a miracle, they are on their way out.
It’s sad but true.
