SWIMMING: Silver medal for Conor Ferguson at European Championships

Larne Swimming Club's Conor Ferguson has claimed Ireland's second medal at the Junior European Swimming Championships in Hungary, winning silver in the 100m backstroke final.

Ferguson, who hails from Jordanstown, had progressed comfortably through Thursday’s heats and semi-final to the final.

The 16-year-old, who has a best time of 54.41 was close to that time in the final, touching for silver in 54:49. It was a world junior record breaking swim from Russia’s Kliment Kolesnikov of 53:65 who took gold.

Ferguson returns to the pool on Friday (July 8) for the 200m backstroke and will be joined by Rory McEvoy.

Ally Cunningham, Issie Hayes, Carnmoney girl Danielle Hill and Rebecca Reid all compete in the 50m backstroke, while Reid will join her sister Emma and Ellen Walshe in the 100m Butterfly heats also. Ireland are also entered in the women’s 400m medley relay heats.
