Curran Ladies progressed to the semi-finals of the Mary Moore Trophy after they defeated Newry in a dramatic last-eight clash this week.
After 18 ends with no quarter being asked or given, the teams found themselves tied at 34 shots each. Curran’s Pauline Blair, Eileen Magill, Rene Gallagher and skip Valerie Noble went down by four shots 20 to 16.
Lynda Simms’s quartet of Marwin Hardy, S. McDermott and Joyce Spiers levelled the tie with a splendid 14 to 18 shot return.
Both rinks embarked on 19th ends to decide the outcome: the penalty-shoot out of bowls. Lynda’s four added to their tally with one shot as Valerie’s rink lost by one levelling scores at 35 all. A one-shot lie by Noble on the 20th end was matched by Newry’s Sadie Rice (36-36), taking the game to an unprecedented 21st end.
Curran displayed their resolve with Simms’s and Noble’s rinks adding one and two-shot lies respectively to claim an exciting 39-36 shot victory.
