Mayor opens new MUGA

A MULTI-use games area (MUGA) has been opened at the site of the old tennis courts in Larne's Town Parks.

The synthetic grass surface is designed for a range of sports including tennis, hockey, football, rugby and Gaelic games, and is equipped with floodlighting. The facility will be enjoyed by a cross section of schools, clubs and community groups.

The MUGA is the result a 130,000 investment by Sport NI and Larne Borough Council through its Park and Sports and Facilities strategy.

Mayor Andy Wilson said: “We are grateful for the substantial investment by Sport NI in our local sports facilities.

“This investment is a fine example of the council working in partnership with Sport NI in responding to the needs of local people in terms of sport and recreation. The MUGA will enhance the already popular Town Parks and we are delighted with the interest and usage already.”

Sport NI provided funding of just under 100,000 for the development. Chief executive Eamonn McCartan said: “As the lead agency for the development of sport in Northern Ireland, we are delighted to be able to support this project.

“Increasing participation in sport and physical activity, and increasing performance standards within sport are key objectives for Sport NI. This new facility will undoubtedly achieve this goal”.
