The Carnlough man’s side were gifted the lead courtesy of a Richard Dunne own goal on 77 minutes, but failed to stamp their authority on the match.

QPR took the bull by the horns and Eduardo Vargas raised the roof at Loftus Road when he fired home an 87th-minute equaliser from close range, having been set up by Charlie Austin.

The Reds regained the lead when sub Phillppe Coutinho’s deflected shot found its way past Alex McCarthy and into the bottom corner.

But the R’s weren’t done yet and livewire Vargas pounced again - this time with a header which crept over the line, levelling matters at 2-2.

It looked like both teams would have to settle for a share of the spoils but, in what was the defining moment in a frenetic finish to the match, Steven Caulker’s own goal gave Rodgers’ men a precious win in west London.
