Amateur League, Division 1C: Newington Rangers’ three-match unbeaten run came to an end with Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at new leaders, Shorts.

Manager Stephen Holland said he was pleased enough with the performance. “The whole second-half was 60-40 Newington. We were 2-1 down and pushing for an equaliser but Shorts got a lucky third - a Karl Johnstone own goal. A few seconds later, our heads were down and their midfielder came right through the middle.

“I can’t criticise the players, we’ve nothing to be ashamed of. It was a good, settled performance and we were just off the back of three successive wins.”

Newington’s goal came in the first-half, a superb free-kick from Aaron Wilson to cancel out Shorts’ opener.

Newington Rangers: E. Wilson – Brown, McGarel (McDowell), Henry, K. Johnstone – A. Wilson, Tennant (A. Robb), Gilmore, Monaghan – McCann, Steele (D. Johnstone).
