Bleach works or bust

IF the proposed development at the old bleach works doesn't go ahead, Larne Football Club could be forced to drop out of the Irish League and play in the Amateur League.

It sounds like a drastic measure, but that's the stark message that chairman Archie Smyth will be delivering to supporters at a public meeting at 12 Noon this Saturday at the social club in Inver Park.

The provision of a new 40 million retail development on the derelict site adjacent to the football ground is the key to their future, says Smyth, and there is no way they can survive in the top echelons of the sport if that shopping centre does not materialise.

And Smyth is clearly worried about the possibility of that happening, following the news recently that Stormont Environment Minister Edwin Poots has given his backing instead to the plans for an extension to the existing Co-Op supermarket in the town centre.

"It smacks to me as being a political decision," said Smyth. "It's a seriously worrying development and we need to express our disapproval in the strongest possible terms," he added.
