PAUL Millar can't quite believe how lucky he has been as the Larne manager.
He may not have won anything yet – or even come close; after all he's only been in charge for half a season. But he's assessing his situation with different measuring tools.

It's obvious that the former Glentoran manager has been a big hit with the players, officials and supporters in a way that hasn't happened in quite a while at Inver Park. But what makes Millar believes he's fortunate?

"Well, I met five players one night and they all put pen to paper within two hours and the next night I met four more and they all needed just the same amount of time to sign up again. I can't believe how well things have been going in this respect," said Millar.

"I was especially delighted to secure the services of BJ McMenamin as a bona fide Larne player, rather than merely being one loan, once he was released by Glentoran last week.

"Gary Rafferty and Liam Hogan are also signed, while Brian Neeson and Robbie White have both committed their future to Larne – subject to them securing their departure from Linfield. That seems a formality, but they won't be our players until it becomes official.

"As you are aware, I stated very clearly to all the players at the end of the season that I wanted every one of them to stay and now I will be striving to have each and every one of them on forms by the end of this month.

"However, Andrew Dickson and Willie Faulkner have been speaking to other clubs, which is their entitlement. If they are fixed up then fair enough, but should they not get sorted out then I will have to review the position, because I said from the outset that I only wanted people here who are keen to play for the jersey – and their decision to sound out other options doesn't quite convince me they want to do that.

"I am delighted it has been so straightforward to sign the players. In fairness, they all understand the situation. It's not about negotiating or haggling. I have a budget and I have worked out the offers and simply say: 'Right lads, there's the offer' and it's up to them whether they accept – and they seem to be happy and not simply wanting money.

"The club have given me what, in the current economic climate, is a decent enough budget. It was a figure intended to cover everything and it was then up to me how to use it.

"Not all the players are on the same deal but, let me put it this way, if the 11 players on the pitch on a Saturday win the game, they will all get the same. Those who are on a bigger basic are on a lesser bonus - and I think that's a good deal all round.

"I have been spending the money as if it was out of my own pocket. But, in all honesty, the players don't appear to be worried about money. They seem to be happy playing with the club and they want to continue to do that – which is great," added Millar.

Meantime, Larne's assistant manager has paid tribute to former club official Sam Howie, who sadly passed away last week.
