The sun finally popped its head out on Bank Holiday Monday during the finals of the Ulster Graded Tennis Tournament at the Belfast Boat Club. This tournament attracts hundreds of players of all calibres from all over Ireland and it is the last major event on the tennis calendar for 2008.
Two Larne ladies - Jane Cloke and Catherine Wylie - who play for Whitehead Tennis Club played well into the evening to beat their opponents from Dundalk 6/1, 6/7, 6/7. It was a very tight match and the Dundalk girls were gutted, given that they won the first set so easily. Jane Cloke and Catherine Wylie who both nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast were delighted at the outcome and commented that they simply held their nerve in the tie breaks to come through and win. Catherine Wylie’s two children were there to watch their mother play long and hard and when she won they simply could not contain their excitement and ran out to congratulate her.
This year’s tournament was sponsored by Knightsbridge Chartered Financial Management Ltd and Curzon Capital.
