PSNI 1sts XI 1
Saturday was to be Larne Ladies Hockey Club 1st XIs biggest test to date, up against the undefeated league leaders PSNI.
It was therefore a blow to Larne’s hopes when PSNI made it 1-0 to the away team after a goal mouth scra
mble six minutes in, providing the Larne girls with an uphill task for the remainder of the game.
Larne however showed what they were made of and came back fighting keeping some sustained pressure in the PSNI circle and credit must be given to the away sides defence who didn’t give Larne a clear cut chance in the circle.
The second half was much more open moving quickly from end to end, none more so than when PSNI successfully defended a Larne penalty corner and quick passing released a PSNI forward one on one with the Larne ‘keeper Caroline Morrow, the on rushing ‘keeper however put enough pressure on and PSNI fired wide with the clearest opportunity of the match.
After withstanding some PSNI pressure the fast paced match started to show in legs of Larnes opponents and despite both teams starting to tire it was Larne who looked stronger in the closing stages. All that lacked was the final touch from Larne as PSNI defence showed signs of panic, it was all to reminiscent of the first match of the season, that day Larne couldn’t find the deserved equaliser against Raphoe, this time it was PSNI, the score finishing Larne 0 PSNI 1.
PSNI have now played 9 and won 9, but they definitely were tested at the weekend and with Larne two games in hand a good run could yet surprise the rest of the league. Next week the 1sts take on a fellow senior three club Holywood in the cup with nothing short of a win good enough!
