ISLANDMAGEE 3
NEWINGTON YC 2

ISLANDMAGEE shattered Newington Youth Club’s unbeaten league record with this pulsating 3-2 victory at Wilbourne Park.

Newington didn’t do their cause much good when they had a player red-carded inside the opening minute for heat
dbutting Michael Moore.

The 10 men would have snatched the lead but for a goal line clearance from Stephen Tierney. Instead it was the Islanders who set the wheels rolling on 37 minutes when Andy Waide cut inside, brushing past four players before thundering the ball in low and hard between keeper and post.

Newington were howling for the dismissal of Island netminder David Harrison for handling the ball outside the box, but with his delayed clearance having rebounded back off a visiting player, it was surely accidental and referee Redfern preferred yellow to red.

Not that Island escaped scot-free as Harrison couldn’t quite cling onto the resultant free kick and there was Thomas Duffy, lurking menacingly at the back post, to smash the loose ball over the line.

The 10 men could have started the second session just as they had finished the first but for a couple of useful stoppages from Harrison and the Wilbourners regained their lead on 65 minutes. What a strike from Billy Waide, right into the top corner of the net, after being put through nicely by Moore!

Two minutes later Island were celebrating again with Moore releasing Karl Murray, whose cross was slotted home by Peter Marks.

Newington notched a consolation through an unmarked back post finish right on time.

Next Saturday Island are back at Wilbourne Park for the visit of Dromara Village.

Islandmagee; Harrison – McConnell, Tierney, Phillips, Lough – B Waide, Moore, Moffett (Large), A Waide – Marks (Gibb), Murray. Sub (unused) Craig.

Player Out; Paul Mathers, D/M, Barn United.
