Looking back... Hospital appeal

Appeals to keep Cairndhu Hospital open appeared to have failed in April 1986.

Workers at the hospital and public representatives had campaigned to the Northern Health and Social Services Board to maintain the convalescent hospital.

Ald Jack McKee said: “I received a letter from the board which said that after considering the cases put forward by different interested groups they were still going ahead with the closure.

“The letter says that taking into account the board’s first priority to improve facilities and staffing in the Moyle and Smiley Hospital’s and to make the best possible use of existing social services resources in the area, it was necessary to shut Cairndhu.”
